Defining Leadership in Workplace

"Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes" - Peter Drucker

Leadership is more than a specific position or job title in an organisation. A true leader needs to have a strong sense of self, know what are the qualities to spread positive influence to other people, and are flexible with the qualities they possess.

Leadership ≠ Management

Often, people equate leadership to managers, but unfortunately, that is not usually the case. It is required for managers to be goal-oriented, ensuring that they have the most effective and efficient processes to produce the results.

Although leaders are equally concerned about results, but they are more concerned about the people involved in the process. They are guided by a vision, and this vision is effectively conveyed the vision to the people working for them.

Why is leadership important?

As demographics are constantly changing in the 21st century, organisations find themselves constantly trying to meet different challenges in order to stay afloat in the industry, and to stay ahead of their competitors. Henceforth, leadership and leadership development will lay the foundation for organisations to be successful.

"Tomorrow's companies will need to have the brains of a Business School Graduate and the heart of a Social Worker." Thomas Friedman, author of The World Is Flat

Changes to organisational structures and procedures will inevitably lead to uncertainty and role conflicts in employees due to increase turnover, new or additional job expectations etc. This has damaging effects for the organisation especially if the aforementioned is mishandled.

Leaders play a role in aligning employee's motivation to company's vision. Effective leaders are able to build a sense of belonging, community within the workplace. Highly engaged employees feel a strong personal alignment to the mission, vision and objectives of the organisation. This emotional attachment motivates employees in the active pursuit of opportunities to improve operations and working environment.

To create a conducive working environment, much is derived from effective communication between leaders and their employees. A good leader is definitely a better catch than a good manager in the business landscape today.
