Challenges Of Traditional Human Resource Management

“Change is the only constant in life” – Heraclitus, Greek Philosopher

Businesses are constantly adapting to volatility and uncertainty as a way of life. The ever evolving market conditions and threats have challenged organisations, big or small, forcing them to go beyond their limits to find growth and to stay competitive – improving operational effectiveness, expanding into new markets, etc.

This has a direct impact on the Human Resource Management of an organisation. Today, global workforce diverge in age, gender, education and culture, and human resource strategies need to draw on these differences and successfully incorporate them into the organisation culture. In order to meet all these challenges, traditional and obsolete human resource strategies will have to be eliminated.

Traditionally, organisations are run by professional management. Managers are the ones who lead the organisation, sets direction, and supervises the work of employees. In other words, employees are managed, and their work and operations are defined by the management, making people part of the big ‘system’. However, changing times require a more ‘modern’ way of operation, human resource management needs to undertake a more strategic role.  Furthermore, traditional roles of human resource management such as payroll and employee benefits have superseded and are easily replaced by web-based, self-service application or be outsourced to other companies.

In order to meet the challenges, HR managers need to ensure that their workers are well equipped with new skills and knowledge according to the business demands. Rather than focusing on a top-down approach, annual goals and appraisals, high performing organisations are adopting ‘Agile Model of HR‘.

This model suggested that HR’s jobs should not be just implementing controls and standards and driving execution, they should facilitate and improve organisational agility to meet the fast changing demands of the markets. It is essential for HR managers to implement and drive programs that create an environment that is fast to adapt and promotes innovation.

Some strategies that follow this model includes training for employees, and not limited to managers; building an environment on continuous learning and learning culture throughout the organisation; developing programs to foster diversity etc.
