Flare Gas Recovery & It’s Utilisation in Oil and Gas

Flare Gas Recovery

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Flare Gas Recovery

Flare Gas Recovery (FGR) is the process of recovering the waste gases that would normally be flared, so they can be used as fuel gas elsewhere in the facility.

As part of optimising the production operations, oil and gas producers use flare gas and set up a flare gas recovery system to be more cost-efficient. A flare system can safely be designed to meet the challenge of reducing emissions to the environment as well as reducing the cost of operating the overall flare system. The overall economic model of flare operations can be analysed via the cost of flaring in terms of: flare maintenance, environmental emissions and alterative gas use (export, fuel gas).

When oil prices are high, flare gas is a revenue stream, especially if there is no cost incurred for greenhouse gas emissions. However, with low oil prices and increasing environmental concern, utilization of this flare gas is an obvious choice because it is commercially attractive and good for the environment.

Flare Gas Recovery in Oil and Gas

Flares are safety devices used in refineries and petrochemical facilities. They safely burn excess hydrocarbon gases which cannot be recovered or recycled, and excess hydrocarbon gases are burnt in the flare systems instead of releasing the vapour directly into the atmosphere.

Flare Gas Recovery (FGR) is the process of recovering the waste gases that would normally be flared, so they can be used as fuel gas elsewhere in the facility.

Although flare gas recovery is not an entirely new concept, the concept of recovery of higher-pressure gases with a closed flare was developed for the offshore market in Norway by Statoil (now Equinor) and its Gullfaks partners. Such recovery is now patented and licensed to ABB Gas Technology.

Flare Gas Recovery (FGR) & Its Utilisation In Oil & Gas is a comprehensive course designed for Energy/Oil & Gas professionals who are keen to attain a holistic and integrated overview of flared gas and its’ business advantages. It mainly covers the upstream (exploration and production), but touches upon the downstream (refining) as well. It is aimed at both technical and non-technical practitioners who would like to gain a complete understanding of the dynamics of Flare Gas Recovery, global/ environmental concerns on Flared Gas, and utilisation options available for the recovered gas.

Several key learning objectives include:

  • Achieve a comprehensive overview of the Flare Gas Recovery
  • Develop understanding of Oil and Gas Value Chain and significance of FGR
  • Understand the dynamics of gas flaring
  • Develop understanding of different types of flares
  • Understand different components of FGR System
  • Master technical terms to boost credibility with colleagues & other stakeholders
  • Understand the utilisation options available for the recovered gas
  • Get awareness of practical FGR Projects around the world
  • Become aware of the World Bank Initiative of zero routine gas flaring by year 2030
  • Develop understanding of different FGR Technologies
  • Develop awareness of FGR through case studies
