Masterclass in Reliability Centred Maintenance

Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) is a systematic and highly structured approach to maximise safety and the function of equipment assets. RCM uses a rigorous framework for identifying and eliminating all the potential ways an asset can fail to perform its intended function and/or the consequences of that failure.

One of the RCM principles include condition based maintenance, or condition monitoring. This involves the practice of closely monitoring the status of a component or system to pre-empt any potential failure. Another aspect of RCM also involves implementing an effective Predictive Maintenance (PdM) program. In other words, the optimisation of RCM adds an amount of control to the current maintenance strategies. This would result in reduced downtime and maintenance costs, and increased performance which would improve the overall efficiency of maintenance procedures.

Some analytical tools used to optimise reliability include reliability statistics, reliability block diagrams, failure modes effects and criticality analysis and root cause failure analysis. Plant maintenance is important in ensuring production management is maintained at an optimal operational cost.

Assessment Criteria for RCM

Many organizations across the different industries have widely adopted the minimum criteria for RCM processes outlined in technical standard SAE JA1011 — Evaluation Criteria for Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) Processes. The minimum criteria begin with asking the following seven questions:

  1. Identify System Functions
  2. Identify Failure Modes
  3. Identify Failure Causes
  4. Identify Effects of Failure
  5. Identify Consequences of Failure
  6. Determine Preventative Tasks
  7. Identify Alternatives

RCM provides a structured framework for analysing the functions and potential failures for physical assets. RCM gathers data from the results achieved and feeds this data back to improve design and future maintenance. This feedback is an important part of the Proactive Maintenance element of the RCM program. In today’s competitive economy, that translates into cost efficiency methods and allows companies to save on expenditure year after year. To remain competitive, most companies can no longer afford to remain on the side lines doing things like they have always done before. A RCM maintenance training program moves your company’s personnel into the 21st century.

Masterclass in Reliability Centred Maintenance is a 3-day training course held from 7-9 October 2019 (Kuala Lumpur). Following the completion of this 3-day masterclass, you will gain a better understanding and expertise on how to apply RCM concepts and techniques. You will gain an understanding on the primary goals of RCM process, defining the functions of each asset in its operating context, applying cost-effective decisions and more. Training is led by an industry expert with over 30 years of maintenance experience including 25 years direct SAP experience.
