Leadership Capability

Developing Leadership Capability & Thinking Strategically

Every organization faces complex challenges from time to time and it’s the responsibility of the leader to help the organization get out of it. Taking on a leadership role is not about having a fancy, high level position but it’s more of a responsibility towards the organization and its employees. To become an effective leader tomorrow, who can resolve the problems of the organization, he/she must develop certain skills today.

The organizations need to develop leaders who help create the right organizational structure that motivates their employees to give their best performance.

6 ways to develop leadership capability:

  1. Exercise discipline
  2. Take initiative to do more
  3. Welcome criticism
  4. Develop situational awareness
  5. Avoid favouritism
  6. Time management

  • Exercise discipline

An effective leader is always disciplined. If you practise discipline in your professional or personal life, it will carry over in the future and help you become a better leader. People are always inspired by a disciplined personality. One can exhibit its discipline by meeting the deadlines of the given tasks, conducting meetings in the stipulated time frame.

  • Take initiative to do more

Any individual who takes on more responsibilities than just what’s mentioned in the job description has a higher chance of getting noticed by their executives. Taking on more work forces you to step out of comfort zone and helps you grow the most.

  • Welcome criticism

An effective leader does not feel threatened when other people disagree with him. He/she should always keep an open mind. Its not always pleasant to listen to a critical feedback but it can be very valuable for the growth of the organization.

  • Develop situational awareness

“Lots of companies don’t succeed over time. What do they fundamentally do wrong? They usually miss the future. I try to focus on that: What is the future really going to be?” said Larry Page, co-founder of Google. An effective leader is one who can see the big picture. The ability to predict potential issues that might arrive in the future and providing suggestions to combat that, is an invaluable asset. This is what sets apart exceptional leaders from good leaders.

  • Avoid favouritism

Avoiding favouritism and treating everyone around you equally is an essential quality of an effective leader which everyone looks up to. A true leader makes sure that he/she reaches out to its silent, competent workers. Warren Buffett highlighted the importance of equal treatment in the workplace when he was quoted saying, “Personally, I really hope I can treat everyone equally. I think I have done a pretty good job so far, but I know I can do it better.”

  • Time management

An effective leader is one who manages his/her time effectively and sets the priorities straight. Addressing the importance of time, Bill Gates said, “Don’t make the same decision twice. Spend time and thought to make a solid decision the first time so that you don’t revisit the issue unnecessarily. If you’re too willing to reopen issues, it interferes not only with your execution but also with your motivation to make a decision in the first place. After all, why bother deciding an issue if it isn’t really decided?”

Most organizations face difficulty finding an effective leader as any new individual that they hire might not integrate well with the organizations culture. Therefore, the ideal method would be to look for potential leaders in your own organization. One does not become an effective leader overnight. You got to practise certain leadership skills over and over and over.
